Kylian Mbappe scored both goals for Real Madrid as they defeated Barcelona 2-1 on Sunday night at Camp Nou. The victory marked the end of a nine-game winning streak for the hosts in La Liga. It also secured the first league victory over Barcelona for any team this season.
Mbappe's brace brought his career total for Real Madrid to 100 goals. He has scored 14 goals in all competitions this season. The French forward joined Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. He is currently the second-highest scorer in La Liga.
The result placed Real Madrid in the lead in the all-time El Clasico record. Los Blancos now hold 107 victories against Barcelona's 106. Had Barcelona won, they would have broken the club record for the best start to a La Liga season, a mark set by Real Madrid during the 1968-69 campaign.
This was the second consecutive loss for Barcelona under manager Hansi Flick. The team fell to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League just days before the El Clasico. The defeat interrupted a strong start to the campaign for the Catalan side.
Real Madrid has won five consecutive matches. These include three league games and two Champions League matches. The squad sits third in the La Liga table with 24 points. They trail Barcelona by three points after ten matchdays. Atletico Madrid occupies second place with 25 points.
Jose Mourinho returned to manage Real Madrid after two trophy-less seasons. He previously led the club to three trophies during his first tenure. That included a record-breaking La Liga title. His last league title came with Chelsea in 2014-15.
Mourinho celebrated the win with a knee slide on the pitch. He is 63 years old. The manager said the win would mean little if the team lost at El Sardinero next. "Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," he said. "They're playing to win the championship."
The Ballon d'Or ceremony will take place in London on Monday. Mbappe is a leading candidate for the award. He finished last season as the top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and became the all-time leading scorer at the tournament.
Real Madrid faces a trip to El Sardinero following this victory. The team will look to maintain its current winning run. Barcelona will prepare for its next league fixture after the loss. The gap between the two clubs in the standings remains three points.
