The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) confirmed on Oct. 29 that unauthorized actors gained criminal access to its financial aid website earlier this month. Staff identified the breach on Oct. 19, triggering an immediate response from department cybersecurity teams.

Officials stated that the intrusion resulted in the compromise of personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers. The department said it contained the incident and secured its systems after detecting the threat.

In a statement, FLDOE leaders described their actions as swift and decisive. They noted that the department has notified relevant oversight offices and is currently partnering with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to investigate the matter.

State officials emphasized that the breach will not disrupt student funding. Financial aid disbursements and tuition payments will proceed without delay. Eligibility for state scholarships, grants, and student loans remains unchanged by the incident.

The FLDOE said it will continue to share verified details as the investigation progresses. The department remains focused on maintaining transparency regarding the scope of the data exposed.

The confirmation of the breach comes as state agencies work to secure digital infrastructure against growing cyber threats. The incident affects the financial aid division specifically, with no indication of other departmental systems being compromised.
