Ayelet Kroizer will lead Breaking the Silence, a nonprofit that campaigns for international war crimes charges against Israel.
Kroizer served in the IDF Spokesperson's Unit before announcing her new role on X on Monday.
She accused her former unit of manipulating public information to protect the army's image rather than ensuring transparency.
"How vast the control of the IDF Spokesperson has in shaping our perception of reality, and the problematic game it plays with the truth," she wrote.
Kroizer stated that the unit's goal with international audiences was to strengthen legitimacy for military actions.
"The price was the truth," she added.
She noted that she belonged to the haredi, or ultra-Orthodox, community.
Kroizer enlisted during wartime despite having a service exemption.
IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin reacted with a letter to unit commanders.
He asked them to share the message with all soldiers in the unit.
"These remarks do not reflect the people who serve in the IDF Spokesperson's Unit, the values of the unit, or our professional and ethical worldview," Defrin wrote.
He described the unit as composed of individuals from all walks of Israeli society who share a common ethical compass.
