Democrats won control of the Senate in the 2026 midterms.
The party flipped Republican-held seats in some of the nation's most conservative states.
This result reverses the 2024 outcome and gives Democrats new power to challenge President Trump.
The Democratic Party also captured the House.
Democrats won key governorships and state legislatures.
These victories strengthen their position for the final two years of Trump's presidency.
Ken Martin, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called the results the party's best in a century.
Martin told Morning Edition that Americans sent a clear message during this change election.
He said voters are looking for leaders who fight for them, not just the wealthy and well-connected.
Martin said voters gave Democrats a mandate to address affordability and health care.
He described the current system as corrupt and beneficial to wealthy Americans.
However, Trump still holds veto power over new legislation. This keeps the path to policy open and uncertain. Martin believes Democrats have great leverage here. He points to their control of Congress and state governments. Martin acknowledged that opposition to Trump helped drive the results. He argued that voters also embraced the party's message. Our candidates across the board ran for something, not against something, he said. They gave people a positive vision of what Democrats would do while in power.
