Massachusetts high school football players will not play for their state titles at Gillette Stadium this December. The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association announced on Monday that the venue is no longer available for the 2026 championship games. This marks the first time in twenty years that the MIAA will look elsewhere for its final weekend of the season.
The MIAA stated it was informed late last week that Gillette Stadium could not host the event. The association said it will work to secure new sites that provide the best experience for student-athletes and school communities. The 2026 tournament begins this week, forcing a quick search for alternative locations.
A spokesperson for Gillette Stadium cited scheduling constraints as the reason for the change. The Patriots are scheduled to host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, December 6. The MIAA cannot host its championship games later than the first week of December. This creates a tight window for field preparation and cleanup.
The New England Revolution add further complexity to the schedule. The soccer team has clinched a playoff berth and may host an MLS postseason game on either December 2 or December 5. If the Revolution host a match, the teams involved must practice on the playing surface the day before each potential game. These practices would conflict with the timeline required for the football championships.
The Gillette spokesperson noted that the venue and the Kraft family have donated the stadium for these games for nearly two decades. The team emphasized the importance of the logistics involved in coordinating the Revolution's playoff schedule with the Patriots' home game. The venue expressed hope to host the event again in the future.
The MIAA did not name specific replacement venues in its statement. The association confirmed the decision to move the games away from Gillette Stadium for the 2026 season. The next state championship games will take place at a site yet to be announced.
