Firefighters contained a blaze at a chemical processing plant in Greenville, Mississippi, on Wednesday morning after an initial blast occurred just after 7 a.m.
Washington County emergency officials dispatched crews to the Loveland facility, which was previously known as Platte Chemical. The incident involved a chemical herbicide stored in a structure described as a hot box. Thick smoke spread from the site, leading authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.
Emergency personnel worked to control the flames while undergoing decontamination procedures due to potential exposure to hazardous materials. Mayor Errick Simmons said the response involved coordinated efforts from local and state agencies. "Our first priority is the safety of our residents, our first responders, and everyone working at or near the facility," Simmons said. He urged citizens to stay calm and avoid the immediate area to allow staff to work safely.
Officials reported that no injuries resulted from the explosion. They lifted the shelter-in-place order after the fire was contained. The specific cause of the blast has not yet been determined and remains under investigation.
Local authorities expect to release further details on the investigation in the coming days. The facility remains closed while cleanup and assessment continue.
