The state of Baja California has committed approximately 41 billion pesos to a new port development at Punta Colonet. Government officials project the infrastructure could increase Mexican exports via the Pacific coast by more than 35 percent.
Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, the governor of Baja California, stated that the port is scheduled to begin operations in 2029. She noted that the site is located about 250 kilometers from the border with the United States. This position places it near maritime routes that connect directly to Asia.
During the ground-breaking ceremony, Marisa Abarca, the general director of Ports for the Naval Secretariat, described the project as the start of a new phase for national port infrastructure. "We mark the beginning of a new stage for the ports of Mexico," Abarca said.
The construction plan includes port facilities, industrial zones, and highway access. It also incorporates rail connections designed to move cargo more efficiently. These links are intended to strengthen the region's logistics capacity between Mexico, Asia, and the United States.
State estimates and data from the construction firm indicate the project will generate direct and indirect employment. Officials project the creation of approximately 10,500 direct jobs. An additional 30,000 jobs are expected in related indirect activities.
The primary goal of the development is to expand logistics infrastructure in Baja California. It aims to streamline the movement of goods across the Pacific. The final commercial impact will depend on the completion of the construction work and the establishment of necessary transport connections.
The project targets strengthening trade links with international markets, particularly the United States. This country is one of the main destinations for Mexican goods. The new port is designed to offer a strategic alternative for Pacific trade routes.
