London. The trajectory of British actor Nick Mohammed has shifted from magic tricks to major television and stage roles over the past decade. At 46, he is preparing for a new chapter that includes a West End debut and a lead role in a legal thriller.

Mohammed’s career began in Leeds, where he joined a local magic club after receiving a Paul Daniels set as a child. From age 16, he performed close-up card tricks at weddings and hotels to fund his college education. He performed at the 2012 wedding of actor Simon Bird. He says magic "takes you back to a time when anything could be possible."

He developed the character Mr. Swallow while studying for a PhD in seismology and performing with the Cambridge Footlights. After annual shows at the Edinburgh Fringe, he expanded the act into a full-hour set. His screen work began with 2016 films Bridget Jones's Baby and Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. He has since appeared in Deep Cover, Fresh Meat, Stath Lets Flats, Inside No. 9, Taskmaster, Slow Horses and Last One Laughing U.K.

His breakout role was Nate Shelley in Ted Lasso, which earned him two Emmy nominations. Showrunner Bill Lawrence persuaded him to take the part after he initially turned it down. Mohammed says the show stood out because it avoided the cynicism common in comedies of that era. After the second season, he took Mr. Swallow to New York and sold out a 1,200-seat town hall. The audience consisted mostly of Ted Lasso fans who had never seen the magic act.

Mohammed notes that the industry prepares performers for failure but not for global success. He was glad the surge in his career occurred when he was 39 or 40 rather than 21. The Celebrity Traitors lifted his profile further. He reached the final of the 2025 series, which averaged 11.1 million viewers. That figure made it the biggest live audience for a single TV show that year.

He says the offers he receives are now divided into before and after the show. He will host this year’s Olivier Awards. The second series of The Celebrity Traitors ends with its finale this Friday. Mohammed has filmed an episode of Uncloaked and promises "absolutely massive moments to come."

In the West End, he will take over Claudia Winkleman’s role in The Traitors: Acts of Betrayal. Rehearsals start in January, and previews begin in June at the Gillian Lynne Theatre. The production is written by John Finnemore and features a cast of 12 contestants. The format involves a cycle of five plays where roles shift depending on who becomes a Traitor.

Mohammed also stars in Sky’s legal thriller War, which has been ordered for two seasons. Dominic West and Sienna Miller lead the cast. Mohammed plays Michael, an arrogant lawyer and loner. His role is smaller in season one and larger in the already filmed second season. He says a line in which Celia Imrie’s character loathes him was improvised. A Mr. Swallow special is being distributed by Universal, and he has projects in development with the BBC, Channel 4 and Apple. His wife, a music teacher, keeps him grounded by calling his work complaints "first-world problems."
