Billionaire developer Rick Caruso announced Monday that he intends to vote for Mayor Karen Bass in the upcoming election. This decision places him in direct opposition to challenger Nithya Raman, a former City Council member.
Caruso previously spent more than $100 million of his own funds in his failed bid for the mayor's office four years ago. He stated that his recent collaboration with Bass on rebuilding efforts following the Palisades fires changed his assessment of her leadership.
In a written statement, Caruso said he observed Bass growing into the role. He cited her dedication and willingness to cooperate as key factors in his choice. A spokesperson clarified that the statement indicates his personal voting intention rather than a formal endorsement of her campaign.
Bass responded by expressing gratitude for Caruso's support. She referenced their shared history of addressing major urban issues and expressed a desire to continue that partnership for the next four years. The Raman campaign declined to provide a comment on the development.
Caruso's shift in stance follows a period of public criticism directed at Bass. He previously challenged her handling of homelessness and the fire response. However, he began softening his position after the June primary election.
The developer voiced specific concerns about Raman's proposals last week. He objected to her stated plan to replace Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell. Caruso expressed worry about the LAPD becoming a testing ground for the Democratic Socialists of America, which has endorsed Raman.
Caruso also criticized Raman's past record as the head of the City Council's Housing and Homelessness Committee. He described that track record as troubling. Caruso, who owns properties including the Grove and Palisades Village, had considered running for mayor again in 2026 before deciding against it.
