Democrats took control of both chambers of Congress in Tuesday's elections. The party now holds the House and the Senate, giving it full authority to pass legislation.
U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., told KOB 4 that the party must focus on affordability. He said the public voted for Democrats because economic conditions worsened under the previous administration. He cited specific sectors that need cheaper prices: healthcare, energy, and everyday goods.
Heinrich warned against excessive oversight as a primary goal. He argued that the party should implement policies that directly improve citizens' lives. He currently serves as the ranking member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
The senator addressed the ongoing war in Iran. He stated that Congress must use every available tool to end the conflict effectively. He emphasized the need to ensure the safety of military personnel while pursuing a strategic approach.
Heinrich also noted that oversight remains necessary regarding perceived corruption. He believes a strategic focus on this issue will help maintain public trust. He expressed hope that the party can use this electoral momentum to secure a successful campaign in 2028.
