Arizona State University honors military members and veterans during its annual Salute to Service from Nov. 6 to 16.
The university hosts more than 22,000 military-connected students. Shawn Banzhaf, executive director of the Pat Tillman Veterans Center, stated that no other university executes this program in the same manner.
Banzhaf noted that the initiative begins with university leadership. He pointed to President Crowe, whose father served in World War II. Banzhaf explained that having military ties at the top allows the mission to trickle down to the entire campus community.
Various colleges at ASU will host events throughout the week. The schedule includes a Friday evening workout and a veteran's powwow. The week culminates in the Salute to Service football game on Friday against Colorado.
Banzhaf confirmed that the university plans to conduct a flyover during the event. He described the goal as being military supportive rather than just military friendly. He stated, "How can we produce salute the service that's beyond expectation."
Banzhaf is one of 700 veterans currently employed by ASU. He was recently inducted into Arizona's Veterans Hall of Fame. Fewer than 0.1% of all veterans in Arizona receive this distinction. Banzhaf called the induction a humbling honor.
He emphasized that service continues after a person leaves their uniform. Banzhaf said, "It's not the service that you have while you're in your uniform. It's the service after the uniform." He added that he hopes the week leaves veterans feeling appreciated and students inspired to serve.
