The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 10-1 on Monday night to take a 3-0 lead in the World Series. The win extends Milwaukee’s postseason record to 7-0 across the National League Championship Series and the World Series.
Jackson Chourio, 22, led the Brewers with four hits, two runs scored, and one run batted in. He opened the game with a single and followed it with singles in his next two at-bats. His fourth hit, a double in the fifth inning, came during an eight-run explosion for Milwaukee. Chourio also stole a base, giving him three steals in the series.
Chourio became the youngest player with a four-hit game in a World Series since Joe Garagiola in 1946. The Brewers hit .571 through three games, with Chourio personally going 8 for 14. The Rays managed only three hits in the game, one of which produced their sole run.
"I think that you could say this is one of my better games," Chourio said after the game. He explained his approach: "I was just taking every at-bat like it could be my last and trying to find any way I could to get on base. Because I know, as long as I get on base, there's guys behind me who could score."
Manager Pat Murphy praised the young star’s growth. "Nobody's surprised that Jack Jack's doing this," Murphy said. "He's turning into a fine player. He's understanding what it takes, the discipline that it takes. He's coming into his own." Murphy compared Chourio’s work ethic to Kobe Bryant, noting the player’s ability to play defense and steal bases as a "total player."
The Rays have not scored more than one run in a game this series. They scored four in the first inning of Game 2 but lost that contest 5-4. They have not scored since that first-inning burst in Game 2. The Brewers are now 7-0 in their last two postseason rounds. The only team to sweep both rounds previously was the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, though that series had a five-game format.
Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday at Tropicana Field. A win would give the Brewers their first 8-0 start to a postseason in Major League Baseball history. Chourio is under contract with Milwaukee through the 2031 season, with two club options extending his deal through 2033.
