JetBlue is charging $50 for the first checked bag on most domestic economy tickets purchased after November 3. The new rate applies to flights within the United States, Canada, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This marks the second increase in baggage fees for the airline this year.

The fee structure escalates during high-demand periods. If passengers pay at least 24 hours before departure, the cost rises to $55 for peak travel times such as Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Those who check bags within the final 24 hours will pay $60 during off-peak periods and $70 during peak periods. The price for a second checked bag starts at $70 each way off-peak and $75 during peak travel, with airport counters charging up to $85.

The cost of checking luggage has climbed steadily since early 2026. At the start of the year, the first checked bag on most domestic economy flights cost $35 during off-peak periods. The first increase occurred in March, following the start of the Iran war in late February. U.S. and Israeli strikes triggered a surge in jet fuel prices, prompting JetBlue and other major carriers, including Delta, United, American, and Southwest, to raise their own fees.

The geopolitical conflict remains active, with traffic through the Strait of Hormuz largely restricted. This shipping chokepoint is critical for global oil supplies, and the disruption has kept fuel costs high. JetBlue executives stated on the airline’s third-quarter earnings call last week that demand has stayed strong despite rising fares. They noted that the average fuel price reached $3.91 per gallon in the summer, a 57% increase from the previous year.

The airline projects fuel prices will climb further in the final three months of the year. The expected average is $4.64 per gallon, which is an 85% increase from the same period last year. JetBlue said in the spring that these fee adjustments are designed to offset higher operating costs while keeping base fares competitive. The company’s flagship terminal is located at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Associated Press sent JetBlue emailed requests for comment regarding the latest fee changes on Wednesday. JetBlue noted that certain passengers, including members of its loyalty program and holders of eligible co-branded credit cards, can still check bags without paying a fee. The new pricing structure takes effect immediately for new ticket purchases.
