Wall Street surges as Democrats seize Congress
Stocks posted record highs Wednesday, defying the political shift that left Republicans without sole control of the federal government.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1,519 points on Wednesday afternoon.
President Donald Trump posted a message to Truth Social later that day to acknowledge the market movement. He noted that the market had reached a record high 91 days into a recent period. The post claimed that individual retirement accounts had risen sharply under his administration.
This surge occurred immediately after the midterm elections, which resulted in a loss of sole control for the Republican Party. Democratic candidates won enough seats to appear set to control both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Several states and government positions previously held by Republicans flipped to the Democrats during this election cycle.
Market analysts often observe that stock prices tend to rise in the months following any U.S. midterm election. The specific outcome this year, however, provided a political scenario that Wall Street investors appear to favor. The split government structure leaves the executive branch with the President while the legislative branch falls under Democratic leadership.
President Trump told Fox News that he intends to collaborate with the new congressional majority. He told the interviewer that the Democrats had fought hard against him for a long time. When asked about the prospect of working together, he said he would do so and believed the Democrats wanted to cooperate as well.
The Nasdaq composite index rose 1.9 percent during the same trading session. The S&P 500 followed the broader upward trend as traders processed the election results and their potential impact on policy.
