Semaj Morgan, a wide receiver for the University of California, Los Angeles, has become a central figure in the team’s undefeated season. The senior from Detroit transferred from the University of Michigan to join UCLA in January. Since his arrival, he has recorded 7-0 as the Bruins have won their first seven games of the 2026 season.
Morgan’s role expanded following a season-ending injury to starting receiver Mikey Mathews during the team’s second game against San Diego State. In that match, Morgan caught six passes for 73 yards, helping UCLA secure a 28-10 victory. He has maintained a consistent presence in the offense since then, lining up both inside and outside the formation.
The receiver previously played for Michigan, where he was a freshman member of the 2023 national championship team. Morgan described a period of decline after those leaders graduated, noting that his competitive energy waned and his confidence dropped. He admitted to feeling like he had lost his passion for the game during his time in Ann Arbor.
UCLA offensive coordinator Dean Kennedy and wide receivers coach Colin Lockett pursued Morgan after learning of his availability through the transfer portal. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who had played with Morgan previously, encouraged the staff to contact him. Lockett arranged an immediate video call with Morgan, leading to a late-night visit to the campus facility on January 5.
During that visit, the coaching staff showed Morgan film cuts from his time at Michigan, analyzing both his successes and mistakes. Head coach Bob Chesney met with Morgan the following morning and pitched the program as the best fit for him and his family. Morgan committed to UCLA by phone while waiting for a flight back to Michigan.
Morgan’s background includes playing quarterback at West Bloomfield High School in Oakland County, Michigan, where he helped the team win the 2021 state championship. He committed to Michigan over Mississippi, believing the Wolverines could compete immediately. That assessment proved correct in his freshman year, though his development stalled in subsequent seasons due to program changes.
His father, Semaj Morgan Sr., observed a shift in his son’s demeanor during practices at Michigan. He advised his son to remain competitive and enjoy the game. After a turnover in a Week 7 game against Wisconsin, Morgan rebounded with a 33-yard reception to help seal a 17-7 win for UCLA.
Morgan currently stands as a key contributor in the Bruins’ offense under head coach Bob Chesney. The team remains ranked No. 7 in the country. Morgan continues to play through minor setbacks, focusing on earning his position through preparation and performance in every practice and game.
