Cleveland Browns fans face a new uncertainty heading into Sunday's road game at New Orleans. Starting quarterback Deshaun Watson entered the league's concussion protocol on Wednesday, casting doubt on his availability for the upcoming contest.

The injury traces back to a helmet-to-helmet collision with Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jaquan Brisker on the opening drive of last Sunday's loss. Watson reported symptoms to medical staff on Tuesday morning, though he had cleared a game-day evaluation by an unaffiliated neurotrauma consultant after missing three plays in Pittsburgh.

Watson's performance this season has been steady despite the current health scare. The veteran has started the first eight games, completing 65.5 percent of his passes for 1,806 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions. His availability directly impacts Cleveland's position in the AFC North, where they currently sit third with a 5-3 record.

If Watson does not clear the protocol in time, Shedeur Sanders will assume the starting role. This would mark Sanders' first start of the year after losing the competition to Watson. The 2025 fifth-round pick threw only three passes this season following a rookie year in which he started seven games.

The Browns' quarterback room also includes Dillon Gabriel, who returned from injured reserve to serve as the emergency quarterback in Week 8. Rookie Taylen Green remains on the roster as an additional option should the need arise.
