San Antonio Spurs forward Devin Vassell will start power forward for his seventh season in the NBA. Despite the addition of veteran Tobias Harris and the promotion of guard Dylan Harper to the starting lineup, Vassell has retained his position. This stability provides the team with a consistent anchor in a roster that has undergone significant turnover.

Vassell signed a five-year, $145 million contract extension in 2023. He is currently the franchise's longest-tenured starter. In the 2025-26 regular season, he averaged 13.9 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. During 23 playoff appearances last year, his rebounding average increased to 5.3 per game while he defended Karl-Anthony Towns in the NBA Finals.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson describes Vassell as the most consistent person on the roster. Johnson, who served as Vassell's player-development coach when the forward arrived in 2020, notes that Vassell has mastered multiple roles. He has played small forward, shooting guard, and power forward over the last six years. Johnson says Vassell has reached his prime as a dependable presence both on and off the court.

The team relies on Vassell to secure rebounds for a guard-heavy lineup. In an overtime win against the Utah Jazz, Vassell shot 2-for-9 through the third quarter. He then scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a 10-foot jumper and a putback dunk. The Spurs closed the game with a 12-0 run to secure their third win of the season.

Vassell also serves as a mentor to younger players such as Carter Bryant and Dylan Harper. Victor Wembanyama noted that Vassell's leadership growth matches the team's progress as a contender. Wembanyama stated that the team has full trust in Vassell to handle critical moments in games. Vassell recently told Bryant that he was once in his shoes, encouraging him to avoid overthinking on the court.

In October, Vassell visited Harlandale High School in San Antonio. He presented the boys' basketball team with pairs of Devin Booker signature shoes and the girls' team with A'ja Wilson shoes. He also presented a $10,000 check to the school. Vassell departed the campus in a color-shifting Lamborghini truck, offering a glimpse of his life outside the arena.

Vassell does not focus on individual statistical goals. He says the team needs players who help in whatever way is required. With four or five players capable of averaging 20 points, Vassell prioritizes his role in helping the team win. He remains comfortable in his position as a supporting starter alongside All-Stars Wembanyama and De'Aaron Fox.
