Democrats hold an eight-point advantage among likely voters on the generic congressional ballot, according to a new NPR/PBS News/Marist poll released today. The data suggests the party is favored to gain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in next week's elections. However, the survey indicates the potential wave may be limited, with the Senate remaining a competitive toss-up.

The poll identifies financial pressure as a central driver for voters. One in three Americans reports facing financial hardships, and four in ten say their personal finances are worsening. These economic concerns influence how voters view the current administration. President Trump’s approval rating currently sits at 40%, a slight improvement from recent months, though he remains unpopular with a large share of the electorate.

NPR’s Domenico Montanaro noted that while a Democratic House victory seems likely, the Senate outcome is less clear. He emphasized that patience will be required to determine the final results, as it is unlikely winners will be clear by election night. This delay is typical for vote counting in close races.

The path to these current standings has been shaped by shifting voter priorities. For Democrats and independents, preserving democracy resonates as a top issue. In contrast, immigration ranks as the primary concern for MAGA supporters. The poll captures this divide in the week leading up to the midterms.

In related election news, a federal judge hears arguments today regarding the Trump administration’s bid to compel California to set aside ballots from voters alleged to be non-citizens. This legal challenge follows an appeals court’s decision last night to decline the administration’s request to intervene. Yesterday, President Trump announced a $1 million reward for tips on voter fraud that lead to a conviction. The White House states these efforts aim to secure elections, though election officials note that credible evidence of fraud affecting outcomes has rarely been found.

Meanwhile, Israelis are voting today in a high-stakes election. This is the first national vote since the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. Voters will decide whether to retain Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or replace him with Gadi Eisenkot, a former military chief promising increased diplomacy. High turnout is expected, with many Israelis abroad returning to participate.

NPR correspondent Ruth Sherlock reported that the vote count could continue for days. The prime minister will not be determined until after negotiations between parties, which may take weeks. By Wednesday morning, it should be clear which side secures the most seats in Parliament.

With the U.S. midterms one week away, prediction markets are also active. Shana Bautista, head of global intelligence and investigations at Polymarket, stated the company has investigated dozens of bets concerning the elections. The results of both the U.S. and Israeli votes will shape the political landscape in the coming weeks.
