Federal prosecutors have accused a Southern California father and son of running a massive insurance fraud scheme from their sober living facilities. The criminal complaints filed in Los allege that Nathan Young and his father, David Young, billed health insurers more than $1.6 billion between 2020 and 2026. According to the Department of Justice, the pair collected over $210 million in payments for treatments that were often nonexistent or insufficient.

The complaint describes a system where the Youngs directed 'body brokers' nationwide to recruit vulnerable individuals, including people experiencing homelessness or poverty. Prospective patients were enticed with free flights, cash, hotel stays, and various substances. Once in California, the quality of care varied drastically based on insurance reimbursement rates. High-value patients received private apartments and dinners, while others were housed in cramped, unsanitary conditions described by an FBI agent as 'trap houses.'

Prosecutors allege the pair recycled patients to keep billing, regardless of medical necessity. If patients attempted to leave, staff were instructed to drug them 'to knock the client out.' The complaint states that employees coached patients to fabricate symptoms to qualify for detox services. In one instance, Nathan Young allowed a patient to leave the facility specifically to smoke marijuana off-site to ensure he remained under their care for billing purposes.

Attorney Reuven Cohen represents Nathan Young, who denies the allegations. Cohen stated that his client is a family man with deep roots in the area. He noted that Nathan Young voluntarily surrendered his passport and offered to post bond before agents arrived at his home. The father and son were taken into custody on October 13. David Young, 71, was arrested at 6 a.m. after agents pounded on his door. The pair has not yet entered pleas.

Both men posted $4 million bail each and agreed to home detention. They are scheduled for a hearing on November 5. The charges are part of a wider federal healthcare fraud crackdown that resulted in more than a dozen arrests across multiple states. Authorities also cited the recent death of Presley Gerber, Cindy Crawford's son, at a luxury sober living home in Santa Monica. That case has intensified scrutiny of the region's numerous addiction treatment facilities.

Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald stated that the Justice Department is targeting those who steal healthcare dollars. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized that every dollar drained from insurance systems is a dollar lost for those who truly need care. Patrick Grandy, the assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles field office, added that these schemes cheat taxpayers out of billions. The Youngs are among 15 defendants charged in the case, which includes six medical professionals.
