Jordanian security forces arrested three men on Monday morning in Karak governorate, the Public Security Directorate announced. The suspects were detained following a shootout at dawn. All three men sustained injuries during the operation, while no officers were hurt.
The arrests follow an attack on Friday in the village of Hammoud, located south of Amman. Three individuals opened fire while a funeral was being held at a Greek Orthodox church. Karak has a small Christian community, and no group has claimed responsibility for the violence so far.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed the identities of the detainees in a phone interview with the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka. He stated that the security services had fulfilled their duties by capturing the individuals responsible for what he called a terrorist act. Al-Faraya noted that the suspects offered fierce resistance before being subdued.
The minister added that the three men had been identified shortly after the incident. Security services utilized all available resources to apprehend them. The Public Security Directorate said the men met their just fate, though Reuters reported that officials did not name the suspects or link them to specific Islamist militant groups.
King Abdullah II ordered authorities to respond with an iron fist against those he described as the outlaws of Islam. The monarch said the operation targeted those seeking to undermine the unity of the Jordanian people.
